Laser Retinopexy

A quick office procedure using laser technology to seal retinal tears and prevent vision loss by creating a protective scar barrier around the affected area.

Laser Retinopexy

Laser retinopexy is a treatment used when a retinal tear or small retinal hole is detected before it progresses to a retinal detachment. The goal of laser retinopexy is to prevent fluid from passing through the tear and causing the retina to detach, which can lead to permanent vision loss. It is often recommended urgently once a symptomatic tear is identified. During the procedure, a laser is used to place a series of small burns around the retinal tear. These laser spots create a controlled scar that seals the retina to the underlying tissue, forming a strong barrier that prevents further separation. Laser retinopexy is typically performed in the office using numbing drops, takes only a few minutes, and may cause brief discomfort or light sensitivity. Vision is usually stable afterward, and the laser scars continue to strengthen over several weeks.
