Over 50 years ago, Dr. Steven M. White began practicing in Greenville after finishing his residency in ophthalmology at UNC Chapel Hill. His vision was to create a multi-specialty ophthalmology clinic which would serve the surgical eye care needs of the people of Eastern NC. Dr. White was an innovator and leader in small-incision cataract surgery and was the first ophthalmologist to work directly with local optometrists to integrate eye care.

 

Dr. White moved his growing practice to our current location in 1982. At the same time, he and several colleagues also created the freestanding surgery center across the street, now known as Vidant SurgiCenter, which has been voted #1 in patient satisfaction in the entire U.S.!

We continue the tradition created by Dr. White of educating patients, fellow health care
professionals, and future doctors from ECU Brody School of Medicine regarding eye care and the preservation of the gift of sight.
